Ten projects received awards for innovation in digital media and learning last week as part of the third annual HASTAC/ MacArthur Digital Media and Learning Competition. Winners in the competition's 21st Century Learning Lab Designers category gathered in Washington, DC in conjunction with National Lab Day. Spotlight was there to talk with winners about their projects. "Here we get to say: 'What to you want to create? What do you want to say to the world about your app?' said Leshell Hatley whose winning project Youth AppLab introduces android application development to African American and Latino high school students in Washington DC "As much as the subject matter is about science," said HASTAC co-founder Cathy Davidson of the Learning Lab Category, "the method is about inquiry, exciting curiosity, and teaching people how to work together." Girls in a six-day science camp in Pittsburgh do just that. At Click! The Online Spy School, Girls entering the 6th, 7th and 8th grades work together to use technology to solve fictional mysteries related to biomedical science, environmental protection and expressive technologies. Vindaloo against violence - Melburnians show their support for the Indian community
Vindaloo Against Violence asked Melburnians to protest violence by dining at their local Indian restaurant on 24 February 2010, in response to a spate of attacks around the city. This innovative form of protest was the initiative of digital media professional Mia Northrop, who is a graduate of Melbourne University. The idea proved highly successful, with over 16000 people registering their participation at more than 400 Indian restaurants Australia-wide. A Google Map created to show the distribution of the protest includes participants in every capital city, regional Australia and as far away as Tajikistan. This video presents a small snapshot of the event. It was recorded at Indya Bistro in Carlton, an inner-northern suburb of Melbourne.

New Media Documentary: Technology for Social Inclusion Sharon Daniel [Professor of Film & Digital Media, UC Santa Cruz] Abstract: Artist Sharon Daniel is engaged in an ongoing effort to use technology for social inclusion through the production of "new media documentaries" in which media and information technologies are deployed as a means of giving voice to the experience of socially, racially and economically marginalized "others". Daniel will discuss Palabras_ [palabras.ucsc.edu], a set of tools and interfaces intended to facilitate collective self-representation among communities that don't normally have access to media and information technology; Public Secrets [http an online audio archive of statements by incarcerated women that reveal the secret injustices of the Criminal Justice System; and other works in progress. Biography: Sharon Daniel is a Professor of Film and Digital Media and Chair of the Digital Arts and New Media MFA program at the University of California, Santa Cruz where she teaches classes in digital media theory and practice. Her research is focused on the use and development of information and communications technologies for social inclusion. Her work has been widely exhibited in the US and abroad.

India's National Agriculture Innovation Project (NAIP) has launched a project, led by Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), called "Mobilizing Mass Media Support for Sharing Agricultural Information". Digital Green (www.digitalgreen.org) is a collaborator on the project and uses its expertise in producing and disseminating locally relevant video content. This video features the success story a farmer, Shri. Abdul Shaik Rauf, who cultivates banana on his farm in Banavasi, Karnataka. The video demonstrates the processes of land preparation, planting, and fertigation. Shri. Rauf who started off with only an anna of money is now a richly successful high-intensity banana farmer. The video was produced jointly by Digital Green, ICAR, University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) Dharwad, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Sirsi.
